Anno 1800 eating all of your RAM? Try page files in an SSD Posted: 18 Jul 2020 09:03 AM PDT Hey guys! I was having some issues while playing Anno 1800. To be short, the game was using almost all my RAM causing freezes and lagging a lot. It was impossible to play, even with my specs (Ryzen 5 2600X, RX 580, and 16GB Ram 3200Mhz). I searched the internet for a solution and found anything useful as a fix just for Anno 1800, even a Reddit post or another forum thread talking specifically about this issue or a temporary solution. - So, what are page files and how they work? RAM is a fast access memory (which means data is written and read faster than the storage driver) filled with the most important files that your CPU needs to run the programs. And page files are when Windows reserves a piece of memory in your hard drive or SSD to use as a temporary cache to assist the actual RAM when the memory is full. This feature works best for low tier computers, with less RAM, and is recommended to turn off as your system became more robust, with more and faster memory. But, Anno 1800 can be a little bit hungry if you have large save files like my own and a lot of things happening on the screen. - How to enable page files? First of all, since RAM is a fast access memory, is not worth to configure the page files in a common hard drive just because they are slower – My Windows was configured to use my hard drive as a page file folder and I was having the same issues. So what you need? A SATA SSD, that have roughly 500MB/s reading speeds, or a Nvme drive, with speeds up to 3400MB/s. How to enable: 1- Open Windows console (Windows key + R) and type sysdm.cpl and press "Ok" 2- Go to the "Advanced" tab 3- Go to "Performance", "Advanced" again 4- In "Virtual memory", click in "Change" 5- Now you have to uncheck the first box and choose which drive you will allocate the page files 6- And for the last step, you can choose to turn off the feature, leave to the system the task to automatically choose the size of the page file, or manually allocate how much memory Windows will reserve in your drive. 7- Click in "Define" and reboot your system. 8- Now enjoy the game! ---- DISCLAIMER: This fix is not ideal and forever. For what I have researched, this game has some issues with memory usage and this method is not 100% guaranteed to work. It worked for me since I have a fast Nvme SSD storage. This method will not increase your FPS because it tries to solve a stability issue and is not related to CPU or GPU performance. [link] [comments]

Posted: 18 Jul 2020 06:30 AM PDT My video card died. As my system dates back to 2012, none of the recent video cards will fit on my motherboard (which has old PCIe connections). I installed a basic NVidia GeForce GT710, about the cheapest thing I could find to bridge the period until I buy a new computer. Anno 1800 works on this at the lowest settings, but everything takes a very looooong time to load. My budget is limited, so before buying it I want to get some tips on where I'm overdoing things and could get a "lesser" (and cheaper) component which will work just as well. Every penny I can save is welcome, while keeping as much quality as I can within the limits. You need to know that:

Since when can we build multiple botanical gardens, museums and zoos per island? Posted: 18 Jul 2020 11:25 AM PDT I only now realised that we can build multiple cultural buildings per island. For some reason I thought it was limited to one building per type and island. Was this alsways the case or is this a recent change? [link] [comments]
Posted: 18 Jul 2020 02:06 AM PDT Hi all, Wouldnt it be cool for ornaments to 'generate' npc villagers. Right now if you build a park a bit outside of your city, almost nobody will walk to that park and it just remains empty. Maybe ornaments like statues and fountains can generate npc just like houses, just a little less, maybe 1 or 2. What do you guys think? [link] [comments]
Steam warships: Are they worth it? Posted: 17 Jul 2020 09:01 PM PDT I finally got my hands on some monitors and battlecruisers, and I feel quite underwhelmed. Even after they were buffed last year, they still feel like I'd rather just buy more ships of the line. A ship of the line can out-DPS and out-range a monitor and has an extra 33% HP for good measure. Two ships of the line can similarly provide more DPS and tank more damage than a battlecruiser. I recognize that a battlecruiser can play a special role in sieges, as it can outrange mounted guns and even a cannon tower if you have the right high-tier items. Getting those items, however, still seems like an awful lot of investment and set-up compared to cranking out more ships of the line. I don't think there's any way to out-range a big betty anyway, so you might as well just charge in and pummel it down as quickly as possible. Am I missing something? I expected these to feel like a noticeable step up in power, but one feels like a slightly beefier frigate and the other feels like a sniper rifle that fires nerf darts. [link] [comments]
Anno 1800: Question about Production V Island Attractiveness Posted: 17 Jul 2020 05:11 PM PDT Hi, I've just started playing the game and have gotten as far as artisans and have started colonising other islands. My main island, naturally, has almost all my production on it and it's desirability is dropping. I orinignally assumed I would move my production to some of the smaller, less useful islands since it doesn't matter how pretty they are. Problem is steel and glass for eg need hundreds of workers and artisans which means even more farmers etc on those islands to provide the manpower and being fairly well supplied so to get more people per home and not need to devote too much land to houses. My question is how am I meant to have a big, beautiful and developed 'capital' when most other islands will need a tonne of manpower and the workforce isn't shared between them? Am I meant to use that big land mass from the DLC as my main hub and import supplies? I'd life to build a big palace, garden, musem and zoo in a centralised location. You know yourself; you don't play a game like this to build a factory, you do it to build a beautiful city with trees and parks etc. Sorry for being so long winded but the appeal to build a megacity is what's hooked me since 2070 Thanks for any advice!
