The Next Anno Release (laubenheim) … I’ve been thinking about this for a while!

    Posted: 06 Oct 2021 08:00 AM PDT

Oh man, I'm excited! I have been thinking about this for a while, and as a classic lover of bygone names like Pharaoh, Caesar III, Zeus, CivCity Rome, Children of the Nile etc, if anyone was going to bring back the genera and do it to the "9's" ;) it would be the Anno brand.

Ancient Aegean Sea is a prime Anno island universe, but I have stellar idea if the main game was to be set in Rome: Your home island is one like that or Trelawney in 1800 (my new favorite after 1404). You start on a massive continental map with many smaller islands to explore. But as the game unfolds you need to explore Land Maps !!…. Think of it: a new first for Anno. An entire region that is land based. I've read in many other threads that Rome wouldn't work for Anno because of the whole island thing : but imagine a DLC "Gualia" or "Germania" where it is an entire land based map.?!? I can envision this land base map working like this: in the middle there is a very large river. Large enough to support ship transport, but it is controlled by barbarian Gauls. You'll eventually need to conquer them… however, in the beginning You start in a corner of the map on a plot of land. There are other land areas that are locked, unexplored which are open for you to explore/colonize for their unique resources. Instead of ships you would use a legion to move into the unexplored areas (yes, I'm hinting at bringing back land combat in some fashion). If the area of land on the map is uninhabited your legion simply needs to travel there to 'explore' it for a period of time. After they set up a base you need to send in a trade caravan (this is basically your transport ships in this region) to build a wharehouse and off you go. Everything else about the map functions like a normal ocean map. Instead of ships, you build caravans and off you go. Once you build up a sizable legion or two and rid the map of the barbarian controlling river areas you can set up a trade port and send your ships in from other regions to help facilitate faster trade.

To expand on my thoughts for this time period I think the one-size-fits all house would not work here. Ancient civilizations at this time had different classes, the richest of whom living in rather large estates. I could envision some adaptation here from Zeus or Children of the Nile. Where your lower classes would live in the smaller standard 2x2 house, in your middle class (equis) living in a 3x2 house and your nobles (patricians) living in a 5x5 villa. Obviously in typically Anno fashion there would be multiple levels to each house bracket so that they could be upgraded.

With the game being set in the earlier part of the Roman kingdom (Caesar/Cleopatra time frame or maybe earlier) there is a lot of room for open expansion of the base game through DLCs … Greece, Spain, Northern Africa / Egypt. I really would love to see Egypt incorporated hard here… No good Egyptian city builder has been built for over a decade. Maybe Egypt is this anno's "new world". Egypt and Rome had a long symbiotic relationship. The Nile delta is also a perfect Anno island-world map. I could see you having to help rebuild Egypt to unlock technology and goods (much like the prestige aspect of 1404). Egypt offers unique goods needed back in Rome that can't be produced anywhere else : papyrus, linen, dyes, glass ware etc.. and this same principle of unique regional goods could echo throughout the game. For example , olives and wine can only be produced on a Greek map; copper, furs and silver can only be obtained on a Spanish map; Gaul produces bees wax/honey etc….

I could go on for hours on ideas… there's just so much potential here if Anno goes B.C. !

I would love to hear your thoughts

    Anno 1404 compatibility?

Ok so I get that History edition isn't co-op compatible with Venice edition, but what about gold? Is gold edition compatible with history or venice editions?
