Anno 1800 : Balancing economy through unemployment?

    Hello everyone!

I'm new to the serie and I just started playing Anno 1800.

I'm 15 hours into the game and the economy is a little confusing for me. I don't really understand how to balance it.

I tried having all the needs met for a certain amount of population while providing jobs for everyone but I'm hardly making any profit, if not losing money. I've only been able to avoid bankruptcy by begging for small quests to npcs.

I then decided to just add population until I reach the limit to which my production can satisfy their needs, and I'm starting to make profit, despite half of my population being unemployed... Is this how it works? You balance your economy by balancing a population and their needs, not employment? It seems confusing.

Also, is there a way to know exactly how many people can be satisfied by an amount of product? If yes, haven't found it. I keep adding population until I see that my production can't meet their needs anymore, but I'd like to know before I start dropping houses around.

    Thanks for your help!

Is 2205 worth it after 1800?

    Posted: 13 Mar 2022 10:17 AM PDT

I have about 1000 hours in Anno 1800 and feeling tired of it, but still have the "Anno" itch. I was thinking trying 2205, but does it have any advantages over Anno 1800? Is anything in 2205 that much different, better, etc.? I don't really like space games so the fact that it's set in space is not an advantage for me, but if the game has enough mechanical differences to 1800 then I'd still play it.

What game features do you personally avoid/consider gamebreaking?

    Posted: 13 Mar 2022 08:16 AM PDT

Hi, I "finished" the gameplay recently by unlocking everything I am aware of, and I am starting a new run. During the first run, as I was continuously optimizing stuff, I noticed that some things were just so powerful, that they "broke" the gameplay by making large parts of the game unnecessary - e.g. specialist->advanced weapons->docklands makes other regions (or really just any transport of raw resources) unnecessary, or using university to manufacture specialists I want. This ultimately made the game much less complex - I could play in a single region and I could disregard lot of mechanics such as expeditions/world fair/visitors.

So in the second run, I want to voluntarily avoid trading at docklands (any trading, as even without advanced weapons I could easily overproduce something and eliminate new world dependency) and manufacturing items at the university, as I think these mechanics are making the game too simple. On the other hand, I will e.g. still use tractors to get the sweet 400% farm efficiency, because I think it makes the game more complex (you have less farms but they are still there and you need to supply them with fuel).

That got me thinking if there are any other similar things I missed, so I am asking. What do YOU, in your personal opinion, consider gamebreaking/too strong/exploitative mechanic that you avoid/avoided in the past/would consider avoiding in the future (outside of challenge runs)?

    Anno 1404 Diplomacy Achievements Woes

    Posted: 12 Mar 2022 11:44 AM PST

I've been waiting for around 10 hours at max speed for the fucking "Family Treasures" quest to pop. I have all the prereqs, so I'm guessing I've just gotten unlucky. In fact, since I've done so many quests for Helena, she almost never offers me any quests any more, since I'm pretty sure the AI picks from an ever-emptying list as you complete quests. As much as I love this game, it's a pain to achievement hunt in, because of RNG elements like this. Expedition rewards are another bugbear of mine.
