(1800) I thought that selling goods wasn't worth the trouble, and that playing with Pirates was more BS than it was worth, I was wrong on both counts

    Posted: 26 Apr 2022 01:07 AM PDT

So I've got ~450 hours in Anno 1800. I love this game. I'm always trying to do a new odd playthrough. This time I decided I would try to settle one of my pet peeves with the game, which is that selling goods for money didn't feel worth it.

Quick context: I sunk a ton of time in to Anno 1404, it was a great game. In Anno 1404 it was massively profitable to make certain goods for the purpose of selling them to roving trade ships, up to and including the Corsairs. The Corsairs were a nuisance to my competitors, but a valuable client to me. I paid them to leave me alone, and they paid me way more shopping at my harbor.

But that had never quite been the case with Anno 1800. Not only is passive trade quite weak by comparison, but the Pirates aren't active traders and are much more tedious to fight, so I typically don't have them active in my games.

Just before my latest game I realized that I was going about trade all wrong. Passive trade ain't gonna cut it, I had to find new markets and bring the goods to them. I already did a little bit of this - selling soap to Eli the Warden is a great income stream that helps me a lot in early game. This game I resolved to supply every single specially-requested good to the neutral harbors, and it has been a great success.

This list is pretty handy. Of course you can just click on each neutral harbor and see what they want to buy, but this also includes a breakdown of how valuable each good is to sell.

From the start of the game I was shipping schooners full of potatoes to Eli, and though it didn't look like much it added up and I definitely had more cash to burn than usual. After that was the soap, which is a powerful money maker. Then I started smuggling weapons to Isabel (with a side of fried plantains), which is even stronger. When I finally got Anne Harlow to go on a date with me to agree to trade rights, I set up three trade routes for exporting Schnapps, Beer, & Rum, and hoooo buddy it is big money. Schnapps & Rum are okay, but Anne and Jean pay really silly prices for beer. Every single special request good, I'm selling.

My income was way in the negative, floating around minus 5-6k for quite a while I was at Engineers but no Investors. I had huge factories set up for all this alcohol (and weapons), and relatively little tax income to show for it. But it didn't matter, I was swimming in cash, and Anne loves me because I supply booze all day and all night.

Sometimes I'm only the middleman. Kahina sells rum, Anne buys rum - Anne & Jean sell weapons, Isabel buys weapons. I have a clipper doing the circuit of those four harbors, and it is well worth it.

tl;dr I was sad that I didn't know how to make money from trade, but it all came together and now pirates pay me for the privilege of us being friends.

    What could possibly go wrong?

My latest Crown Falls - there is literally no space left on the entire island! :P The city was completed few months ago, but only one I decided to upload the last updates

I think there is a point in every Anno player's journey when you realise that the true enemy was never the Pyrphorians. It was the trees.

What hotkeys do you guys use?

    Posted: 25 Apr 2022 10:12 AM PDT

Hello, I'm an anno newbie with just over 40 hours in this incredible game.

So far I am loving the gameplay but I am not really using any hotkeys to play the game.

I was wondering what hotkeys you guys use frequently and also recommend for new players.

    Thanks in advance!

    Need help with goals

    Posted: 25 Apr 2022 03:11 PM PDT

It's been in the back of my brain for a bit to play a game from the campaign and then through each DLC (where appropriate), and I need some advice.

    The basic rules are:

    1) Unlock everything in a given DLC (or base game) before proceeding to the next.

    2) Do not use content from the next DLC before completing rule one (exceptions can be made for decorations).

So here's what I have so far:

    1) Base game - complete both the campaign and Sister Goode's quests for Bright Sands. Also, reach 5000 Investors to unlock steam carriages.

    Season 1

Sunken Treasures - Complete the questline as well as the Queen's city desire (world's fair, and I think one quest for Archie?).

Botanica - Not really a goal oriented DLC beyond, "gotta catchem all!"

The Passage - Complete the questline and start filtering gas into my cities' power grid? Or pick one city for gas? I've always had trouble with gas figuring out the Arctic

    Season 2

Seat of Power - Plop down a palace. Raise attractiveness (if it's not already) enough to unlock all policies.

Bright Harvest - Add silos and tractor barns to everything, if possible.

Land of Lions - Complete Enbessa questline. Unlock everything for researchers. Get 10,000 Engineers with nothing better to do than go to the research institute.

    Season 3

Docklands - Complete Tobias questline. Unlock every module.

Tourist Season - Complete Tourist questline, including Iron Tower. Unlock all recipes.

The Highlife - Complete Donny's storyline. Build the Skyline Tower.

    Season 4

Seeds of Change - This is the one I need the most help on. I want a housing Hacienda, as well as a crop hub. Fertilizer's a must, with cow farms, of course.

Any advice on this project would be welcome. Any tweaks of my goals, suggestions for how to reach them?

The Humble Potato. This tiny island is the backbone of my empire. All the schnapps, rum, and ethanol for the entire world is made from this potato crop, (and fries for 10k tourists) as well as 62t of iron, 56t of oil and 9t of gold.

Noob question: Anno 1800 under 'additional content' it says I 'already own this content", but when I click on one it says to enter DLC activation code

    Posted: 25 Apr 2022 05:37 PM PDT

Just wondering if I have content that I don't know about. I bought the base game. But why does some DLC content say 'you already own this content' and others say 'you don't own this content yet'.

    Cheers.

    season passes

    Posted: 25 Apr 2022 07:58 AM PDT

I haven't played since the game launched but am thinking of playing again. Is it worth getting all of the season passes? I'm not familiar with how the DLC works in the game. Will I have full access to all story dlc for my next playthrough or are they more of scenario type things? Thanks very much

    Crown Falls Worlds Fair

    Wide streets should increase attractiveness.

    Posted: 24 Apr 2022 06:46 PM PDT

Of course they would also have to check that buildings are nearby, so you can't just plop down a big square over to the edge of your island. Maybe it should also account for things like a garden median.

    WIP - Tourist Island

    Game is unplayable

    Posted: 25 Apr 2022 02:32 AM PDT

    PC Specs:
    Ryzen 5 3600x
    RTX 2070 Super
    32GB RAM

I am having massive issues with the game in my latest game save.
I do have basically settled on every island and i am playing with all DLCs.
Also CrownFalls is basically fully settled with people. (So I have a lot of Investors etc, dont know the number tho)

While trying to play, the game is lagging massivily. Sometimes I have lag spikes, sometimes the UI/Mouseclicks do not get 'accepted' by the game. This makes the game unplayable.

I set most of the game details to 'Low' and I am playing on a 1920x1080 resolution. I am having around 40-60 FPS, sometimes 90 (Depending on the Island I am at). Even on 'light settled Islands' I am having the same issues.

Is my computer actually too weak to play Anno on this kind of save?
I can play VR Games and other stuff fine with my machine.

Is there anything I can do? Id love to play the new DLCs, but the game is just unplayable and annoying to play in this laggy state

So some of the ornaments I have can switch between grass and tile; namely Ubisoft Rewards and a the 1602 ornament. I haven't seen anyone else report this and I was just checking on the Know Issues and didn't see it. Any ideas

Poll: Curious as to the average age of Anno players

    Posted: 24 Apr 2022 01:49 AM PDT

Since Anno games tend to have a lot of depth, I was wondering how many adults are playing this series and what the average player age is. Just curiosity. I myself fall in the 30-40 group.
