What's the deal with money in this game? To play dice?

I've been playing this game for a couple of days now and I'm really enjoying it. Although, there's one issue that's been bothering me a bit so I'm interested to hear how others look at it.

Basically, money isn't worth anything. In my experience, money is so over-abundant that it in a way loses its value. On my first play I was making millions before I even took notice of my balance. Even on harder difficulties, there seem to be no problem making massive profit even with several inefficiency issues. I'm not talking building spacing or warehouse distance, more like "oops, that cargo was sent to the wrong island for an hour".

If economic funds isn't designed to be a major game-play obstacle, it's kind of a problem that it's used as rewards for completing quests. The lower ones yields almost nothing (0.02% of total balance). It really lowers incentive to do anything more than just buy whatever I need instead of questing for it.

Why should I do quests (or even expeditions) for items, why setup and tweak a production line when I can buy a big chunk of what's missing? (because it's fun ofc, but you know..)

I don't mind being able to spend "shortcut-money" when it's really needed, but now I could just as well use it as a permanent substitute. There's never any real decision whether I should buy something or not. It doesn't matter, because the cost is negligible when regular flow is restored. And if I can't make bad decisions, I can't make good ones either, right?

I could be rolling the trader dice until I see the balance going down in millions because I know it'll recover by the time I'm there next time.

And the stuff you can get is so overpowered. Like the gyroscopic torpedoes that are impossible to dodge and has longer range than the medium base turret. With that you can easily take out an island without taking a single hit. Or the permanent white flags. How about getting one for every single cargo ship in rotation. You could make it impossible to sink any of your ships ever. Just equip it on low HP. Let me know if I'm missing something here because I don't know how to counter that, but I don't even use it because it's basically cheating.

    – Escort quest, other side of the map. You get $28.000 and a chicken. Deal? – Nah, I'll rather click this dice.

Feels off to me, but maybe I've missed something?

    Modmanager/SpiceItUp: Not all mods working?

    Posted: 09 Nov 2019 06:00 PM PST

Hey guys, I've come back to Anno 1800 after a month or two but now some of the mods included in Spice It Up aren't working. Namely the "commuter pier at workers" mod, which makes the game 2000% more playable. Most other mods work fine, some don't work at all. I have the latest versions of spice it up and mod manager (Yes I made sure)

    Any advice?
