Just discovered Anno 1800 and I love it!

Hi all, new to the sub. I just bought Anno 1800 and have sunk about 30 hours into it, and I am so happy I discovered this game (and this community!)

I have been a city-builder/management/strategy junkie since I was a kid, with the original SimCity captivating me for years in the early 90s. I enjoyed the hell out of all of its sequels until SimCity 2013, which was so horrendously bad that it was both the last game I ever pre-ordered and the last EA game I ever purchased.

Since then I have discovered other games like Cities: Skylines, but that game is *so* open-ended with no real goals to speak of, so I lose motivation relatively early into my builds. What I really wanted was a city-builder with something extra, maybe some story content or quests or alternate goals or something.

I discovered Frostpunk last year and it scratched that "city-builder with a story" itch quite well; it's a fantastic game if you haven't played it!

But Anno 1800. My God, this game is glorious! The campaign has been entertaining, I love the quest system and the need to balance the desires of different population tiers. I really wish C:S had something like that, but the industries in that game are just pure money-makers, and making money isn't really an issue in that game.

Anyway, I will stop my effusive praise now. I can't believe I hadn't stumbled across it before now! Any other recommendations for city-builders with that additional flavor or other mechanisms?

I wasn't satisfied with my earlier development and my Sim City/Cities Skylines side of me is calling so I tanked my economy and did a massive reconstruction of my entire layout, which is still a WIP. Here's a tour of my districts and their development so far!

Phasing out certain needs is kind of brilliant - Vol. 2

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 06:08 AM PST

On an older post "Phasing out Needs is Kind Of Brilliant", I thought about how there's a kind of thematic genius to higher levels no longer needing certain goods or amenities. But I was stumped on what exactly replaced the community hub for Investors and above. Since everyone was still pretty religious back then and atheism/agnosticism was still a very private affair.

But that's what the theatre and Member's Club is for isn't it? Community?

As mentioned in the original post, there's more private avenues for faith if you have money. But that's not all church is for. It's also for community, a place of socialisation and meeting other people. Engineers (and Artisans) can go to the theatre for that. They can also chat ideas in the foyer, or during the latest variety performance. So I guess the theatre partly replaces the pub as well.

For Investors - AKA your upper crust - pretty much everything revolves around the Member's Club - snacks, drinks with friends, reading, sharing hobbies, pitching new ideas, sharing the latest purchase and most importantly of all: discussing the topics of the day.

So even in a city that's all Investors, they can survive a lack of nearby shops; everything they ask for is brought to them either as room service or available at the local member's club.

The member's club is a kind of combo pub-conference-hall-and-church for snobs. Instead of an off-the-street ale house crammed with patrons, they were reserved, library-like spaces. And the genius of being unlocked at tier 5 where it's not required for upgrading to Investors in the first place? It limits the need to build one to the people who would specifically ask for it - the exclusive club full of new tycoons and aristocracy.

I just got the game and I have a question for the campaign and DLC

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 10:41 AM PST

So should I select every DLC on my first time playing? or should I play with no DLC first and then add them later?

I have zero experience so I'm a little worried all the DLCs will be too overwhelming

Do you have a separate island for Public Mooring and visitors?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2021 07:04 PM PST

I have 3 islands right now. One main island that i manage to reach engineer recently.

Main Island (A) - reached Engineer tier, was planning to keep this rather clean. Only locally produce wheat, bread and schnapps. But I think i have no choice but to place some dirty steam motor factories.

Island 2 & 3 (B&C) - 1 is producing all sorts of ores and another 1 is farm/worker sleeping islands producing sausages and etc.

And other bunch of islands that I haven't fully developed in New World, only 2 islands for RUM & Cotton and some oil.

So my question is, should i buy another island to house museums or zoos? What's the strategy like? Do I have to house people in this island? If so I will need to start from farmer -> worker-> artisan-> engineers etc etc. right?

Anno 1800 - Sudden bankruptcy defeat because of an automatic trade route. Is this a bug?

    Posted: 07 Jan 2021 12:39 AM PST

So yesterday I got defeated in a game and did not know why at first. After reloading the game and watching carefully I noticed I had went into negative money numbers because of buying goods at a neutral port with money I did not have in a route I had previously set to run automatically.

This does not make any sense at all. The game shouldn't have let me buy those goods if I didn't have the money to buy them, the same way you can not build anything when you don't own the needed resources. Besides, you don't even receive a warning that this could happen. What a way to spoil a 40+ hour game!

I am just looking for reassurance that other people think this is just stupid or plainly a bug that will be fixed in future updates.

    Sounds like Anno 1800

I recently completed a compulsory training module for work. All I was thinking was "Have I satisfied all of my peoples needs"

Do you unlock Portraits on custom campaign? Possible to electrify all islands?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2021 06:42 PM PST

    Anyone knows?

I certainly don't want to play against that crazy lady so I just want to put all the easy AI.

Also, is it possible to put electricity in all islands? I barely manage one island.

A noob question for Anno 1800

    Posted: 06 Jan 2021 02:31 PM PST

Hello guys. I just started playing anno 1800..

I want to ask something that i am craving to see if it is possible...

Question : I am eager to keep the balance of my income. I dont want to exhaust my money so i pause productions, resume productions to keep my balance. But the city grows and i am unable to pause productions with a single click. Is it possible that we can find for example all the pig farms and pause all the pigs production?

Sorry for my bed england :)))

    Thank you :)
